George Marifian of Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd. Elected a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel

Belleville, IL, May 14, 2010. George Marifian, a shareholder of Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd., has been elected to fellowship in the American College of Tax Counsel by its Board of Regents.
Marifian will join an impressive roster of other tax lawyers who have been nominated for election as a Fellow of the College. To be nominated for election, an individual must have been engaged in the practice of law for at least 10 years, devoting the principal part of the time to tax and tax-related matters. The individual must also have demonstrated an exceptional degree of professional commitment to the practice of law through active involvement in the work of the Tax Section of the American Bar Association; by planning or speaking in tax seminars and programs; through holding office in tax committees or sections of regional, state or local bar associations; through significant legal writing or teaching in the field of taxation; or by holding a responsible tax administration position with the federal government.
Marifian concentrates his practice in civil and criminal tax controversy, business law, estate planning and probate, and litigation related to these practice areas. He is a recognized tax authority. Since co-founding MM&R in 1984, Marifian has provided a full range of superior legal services to clients in the Southern Illinois and St. Louis Metropolitan areas. With over 30 years of professional experience, his background includes providing legal counsel related to civil tax audits, appeals and federal tax litigation;, tax collection disputes and criminal tax defense; closely held businesses and individuals, business sales and acquisitions, and shareholder litigation; real estate transactions; and wills and trusts planning and litigation.
Marifian is a member of the American Bar Association (ABA) and has served on the organization's Taxation Section for over 20 years. He is a member of the section's Civil and Criminal Tax Penalties Committee, and he is also a member and past chairman of the Employment Tax Committee. He is also a member of the Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) and has served continuously on one of the organization's section councils or committees since 1985. He is a member of the Institute for Illinois Business Laws, an affiliate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law and a past member of the Board of Directors of the St. Clair County Bar Association, where he previously served as its continuing education coordinator. He is a past member of the Illinois CPA Society's (ICPAS) Estate and Gift Tax Planning Committee and a past chair of the ICPAS Southern Illinois Tax Conference. He also served as a member of the Illinois Secretary of State's Business Acts Advisory Committee for several years.
Marifian has dedicated years of volunteer service to numerous community organizations and has served on the Boards of Directors of the Call for Help, Inc., the River Bluffs Girl Scout Council and the Signal Hill Education Foundation. He was also elected and twice reelected to the Board of Education of Signal Hill School District No. 181, and has served as its president.
Marifian and his wife, Nina, have three children.
