Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd. Announces 2015 Law Scholarship Recipients

The law firm Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd. (MM&R), today awarded the recipients of the firm’s 2015 Law Scholarship Award.

The law firm Mathis, Marifian & Richter, Ltd. (MM&R), today awarded the recipients of the firm’s 2015 Law Scholarship Award. Belleville West senior, Carissa Bell, Alton High School senior, Sarah Hasse, and Edwardsville High School senior, Brooke Lunn, each received $1,000 scholarships from MM&R. All three students are planning to pursue legal careers and applied for the scholarships through a nomination process open to all high school seniors in St. Clair, Madison and Washington Counties.
Bell, who will be enrolled at Vanderbilt University in the fall, was selected to receive the scholarship based on her exemplary academic career and involvement in extracurricular activities throughout her high school career. Bell maintained a 4.0 GPA while participating in numerous organized activities, including math team, Maroon Madnezz, BASIC, secretary of the National Honor Society, Renaissance Committee, chairperson of the Prom Committee, Saturday Scholars, Girls Learn International, Volunteer West and the Belleville West basketball team. Outside of school, Bell is an autistic aide for Towerview Baptist Church and works as a Starbucks Barista located inside of Target in Belleville.
Hasse of Alton High School maintained a 4.495 GPA throughout her high school years. She will be attending the University of Alabama in the fall. She is recognized as a member of the National Honor Society (recording secretary), student council, Foreign Language National Honor Society, the volleyball and tennis team, the Thespian Troupe 126, IHSA’s All-State and District Choirs, and participated in Spanish, Biology and Social Studies (treasurer) Clubs. She also assisted in officiating volleyball matches for St. Ambrose Catholic School and refereed youth soccer games for the Village of Godfrey.
Lunn, who will be attending St. Louis University in the fall, graduated from Edwardsville High School this year. She earned a 4.57 GPA and made high honor roll every year of high school. Lunn was an active student council member and participated in numerous school activities such as National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Edwardsville Peer Influence Club, Cross Country and Track and Field, and DECA. Additionally, she volunteered her time on the Madison County Youth Board and held the position of president her last year. Lunn is a self-employed piano instructor and currently works as a file clerk for Sivia Business and Legal Services.
The law scholarship recipients are chosen based on a number of qualifications. Applicants had to be a current high school senior, planning a career as an attorney, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, achieve an ACT score of at least 26 or SAT of at least 1180, rank in the upper 25th percentile of the graduating class and be involved in extracurricular activities. The selection process involved a comprehensive review of all applicants by MM&R attorneys who weighed other factors such as essay, high school achievements and teacher/school recommendations.
Kevin Richter, shareholder of MM&R, states, “We were extremely impressed by the exemplary academic and community accomplishments of these high school seniors. We applaud their ambition and determination to become a part of the legal society.”
This is the 16th year that MM&R has awarded scholarships to local high school students. Shareholders of the firm established the scholarship as a means to encourage and assist students in pursuing a legal career.
